8 silver reales (piece of eight) minted during the reign of Philip IV in 1635.
The 8 reales had a face value of 8 reales in Spain; the coins were often physically cut into eight pieces, or sometimes into four cuartos, to make smaller change. This is the origin of the expression "no tiene más que cuatro cuartos" (it has no more than four cuartos) in the Spanish language, or the colloquial name for this coin, and also in Anglo-Saxon, "pieces of eight" and the origin of the names "quarter" and "two bits" for twenty-five centavos in the United States.
Size: 35 mm.
